10 imagesOn a morning in 1531, Juan Diego saw a vision on the Hill of Tepeyac near today’s Mexico City. This vision instructed him to build a church on the hill in her honor. Juan Diego recognized the maiden of his vision, the Virgin Mary. He told the archbishop of Mexico City what had happened. The archbishop instructed Juan Diego to return and ask for a sign of proof that she was true. First, she healed his uncle then to gather flowers and place them on this barren hill. It was the middle of winter and flowers?… But Juan Diego did not falter and found Castillan roses blooming nearby. The roses were were arranged as a cloak to shroud him and when he returned to see the archbishop, he opened the cloak and the roses fell to the floor and on the fabric was the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe—Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. This day because of the weather, the celebration continued inside the gymnasium of St. Katherine Drexel Parish in Amador County.

It all began in the old country when people didn't have automobiles or telephones. The townsfolk climbed to the top of the hill and fire a couple of rounds in the air and the next village would do likewise. It was loud, crude and it worked! Today, the tradition continues here in Amador County.
