Leaving the familiarity and safety of home creates new and unique photo opportunities. I went on a whim and met up with Glenn Steiner and his Greek Island Workshops in early autumn in the Cyclades Islands southeast of Athens, Greece, in the Aegean Sea.
If you aren't out there, you'll miss the opportunity!

49 imagesAn hour and a half by ferry beyond the bustle of Santorini is the Greek Island of Anafi in the Cyclades group. With a small population about 250, Anafi (meaning "without snakes") is a quite and relaxing destination with many photo opportunities and a more genuine Greek Island experience. Besides the island of Santorini, Anafi share the same desert climate and distinction of the only other place in Europe classified as a desert.

There are three main villages including the Chora (Folegandros), Pano Meria and the port of Karavostasis. There are about 700 who call the island home. Access to Folegandros is by ferry boat from nearby islands of the Cyclades group. Folegandros still retains a rural feel compared to the nearby islands of Santorini and Ios.

260 imagesSantorini (Thira), Greece--a remarkable island in the Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea. Santorini sits on the rim of an ancient volcano that was most likely the largest explosion ever heard on the face of the earth about 1600 BC. The blast created a tidal wave that perhaps wiped out the Minoan culture of Crete and destroyed the island of Thira giving rise to the legend of the lost city of Atlantis. Today, Santorni is popular island for visitors arriving by air, cruise ship and ferryboat. Santorini is about 73 square kilometers, is located about 200 miles southeast of Athens, and its population is about 13,700. Major villages are Fira, Firostephani, Oia, Perissa, Akrotiri, Emporio, Episkopis Gonia, Exo Gonia, Megalohori, Mesaria, Pyrgos Kallistis, Imerovigli, Karterados and other small villages. Today, Santorini is one of two areas with desert climate in all of Europe and there are many picturesque villages, interesting people and beautiful Orthodox churches and chaples there.

Today's Santorini is on what's left of a volcanic island that massively exploded about 1600 BC at the height of the Minoan culture and lead to the legend of the mythical city of Atlantis. Today, Santorini is one of two areas with desert climate in all of Europe. Besides the tourist meccas of Fira and Oia there are many small and picturesque villages there.

80 imagesThe island of Syros in the Cyclades is home to the capital of the island group, Ermoupoli. It's a large town compared to the other places we traveled in the islands. The streets are paved with marble and one hill has the Catholic Cathedral the other the Orthodox. One of the neatest and largest town squares in all the islands is by city hall. Ermopouli was the final island stop before heading back to Athens and home.
