41 imagesreVisions-Mission San Juan Bautista exhibit at the National Steinbeck Center, January 14 to April 7, 2013 Three California photographers have turned their lenses on the historic adobe walls and quiet rooms of Mission San Juan Bautista, California, showing their tribute to California’s 15th mission which continues an uninterrupted celebration of mass since its founding in 1797. Martîn Vargas of Salinas, Carolyn Fox, and Larry Angier both of Jackson crafted more than 30 of their favorite images to be included in a portfolio exhibition in honor of Mission San Juan Bautista. These photos will be displayed from January 14, 2013, through April 7, 2013, at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas to raise awareness of both the beauty and the plight of the mission. The National Steinbeck Center hosted three previous shows of the Soledad, San Miguel and San Antonio de Padua photos, and now is readying for the Mission San Juan Bautista reVisions show. A special opening will be held during First Friday on February 1, 2013 at 6 p.m. for the photographers who will talk about their work and experiences with this project. Each of the three photographers are part of the exhibition project Mission reVisions, an ongoing legacy of the Al Weber Mission Portfolio Workshop, each of which headlined annual displays at the National Steinbeck Center beginning in 2009. Carmel photographer Al Weber who conceived the Mission Portfolio Workshop and The National Steinbeck Center sewed the seeds for the project. The passion continues through his students and former instructors with this exhibit entitled–Mission San Juan Bautista reVisions. Mission San Juan Bautista was the fifteenth and largest mission to be established in California. It is the only mission in California that has served mass continually since its establishment on June 24, 1797 by Father Fermín Lasuén. The mission suffered damage by the San Andreas Earthquake Fault through the years and has been restored both in 1884 and again in 1949. The Mission and its grounds were featured in the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock film Vertigo. Soon, it will once again undergo restoration and retrofit to bring the structure up to current earthquate standards. On December 22, 2012, Bishop Richard Garcia of the Monterey Diocese conducted a special Mass of Reconciliation for the Amah Mutsun Tribe of Ohlone Indians. The Mass was an important event in the history of the tribe to apologize for the tragic events that happened during mission times.

64 imagesPortraits from the Chestnut Roast are photographs of families and friends at this long-time gathering the Saturday after Thanksgiving near Jackson, Calif. It is a tradition started many, many years ago by local Italian ranchers to gather and enjoy each others' company and give thanks for their long-time friendships.

35 imagesSure, these are swell photos on their own. They look great in print as a literal color rendition or in a black and white. However, they ain't bold... Then it's time to slam the those raw "sliders" to their max, peg them, slide 'em all as far as you can push 'em. And if that's not bold enough, then you've got to bend all those pixels! But wait, there's more! Once some pixels are bent, it's simply not far enough and they must be pushed little more, a little polish, if you will, but never on a turd on an image! Others don't need the slam- ming and are fine with a simple little bending of their pixels. In those cases, a little less is really more. So here you go, a folio resluting from slammed-sliders and bend-up pixels for your enjoyment.
