Third of the historic missions in Alta California, San Antonio de Padua was founded by Father Juipero Serra in June 1771. Fr. Serra establish nine of the 21 California Missions. Today, San Antonio de Padua sits as an island in the middle of Fort Hunter Liggett, California's largest Army training base.
Because of its remote location off of US 101, El Camino Real, when one travels here it has the most authentic feeling of the remoteness of the California frontier of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
