Fifth of the historic missions in Alta California, San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded by Father Juipero Serra in September 1772 with Fr. José Cavaller. Fr. Serra would later go on to establish nine of the 21 missions in the last decades of the 18th century California.
Sixth mission by Fr. Junipero Serra, San Fancisco de Asís, also known as Mission Dolores, was founded in October 1776. It is named for St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Order.
The original adobe chapel suffered damage in the 1906 earthquake and was repaired. In 1918, a larger church was completed next to the restored chapel. It was sanctified and declared a basilica by Pope Pius XII in 1952.
One of the few remaining cemeteries within the City of San Francisco is next to the original chapel and contains the remains of many pioneers and native Americans within its fence.
