Founded on June 24, 1797 by Franciscan Padre Fermín Lasuén, San Juan Bautista is the 15th established and the largest of the 21 missions in California.
New light shed upon many of the Mission Churches in California and the world now suggests alignment with heavenly bodies to illuminate the saints and special parts of the interiors. This suggests a long-time association with science and mathematics and the church in the design and construction of the chapel complexes.
