Fifth of the historic missions in Alta California, San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded by Father Juipero Serra in September 1772 with Fr. José Cavaller. Fr. Serra would later go on to establish nine of the 21 missions in the last decades of the 18th century California.
Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was named after 14th century Franciscan St. Louis of Toulouse, France. Unlike many of the California Missions, this one sits at its original site at La Cañada de los Osos" (Valley of the Bears) where many grizzly bears once roamed.
