Santorini (Thira), Greece--a remarkable island in the Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea. Santorini sits on the rim of an ancient volcano that was most likely the largest explosion ever heard on the face of the earth about 1600 BC. The blast created a tidal wave that perhaps wiped out the Minoan culture of Crete and destroyed the island of Thira giving rise to the legend of the lost city of Atlantis.
