Celebration of Christmas Day, January 7, 2013 by St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church, Jackson. Christmas is celebrated on the Julian Calendar which follows the western calendar by 13 days. St. Sava Church is the first Serbian Orthodox Church built in the Western Hemisphere in 1894 by Serbian immigrants seeking work and fortune in the 19th century gold mines of California and the Mother Lode. Today, third and forth generation descendants still worship at St. Sava and their customs are celebrated regularly in the Mother Lode community of Jackson.
