Mostar was named after "the bridge keepers" (natively: mostari) who kept the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over Neretva river. During the Ottoman era, the Old Bridge was built and became one of the symbols of Mostar. The bridge was destroyed by Croatian Defence Council units during the Bosnian-Herzegovian War, on November 9, 1993 at 10:15 am. • Visegrad, Republika Srpska--Mehmed Pasa Sokolovic Bridge over the Drina River

(Turkish: Sokullu Mehmet Pasa Köprüsü); in Visegrad, across the Drina River in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, was completed in 1577 AD[1] by the Ottoman court architect Sinan on the order of the Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasa Sokolovic. It is characteristic of the apogee of Ottoman monumental architecture and civil engineering.
It numbers 11 masonry arches, with spans of 11 to 15 metres, and an access ramp at right angles with four arches on the left bank of the river. The 179.50m long bridge is a representative masterpiece of Mimar Koca Sinan, one of the greatest architects and engineers of the classical Ottoman period and a contemporary of the Italian Renaissance, with which his work can be compared. The unique elegance of proportion and monumental nobility of the property as a whole bear witness to the greatness of this style of architecture.[2]
Three of its 11 arches were destroyed during World War I and five were damaged during World War II but were subsequently restored.[3] During the Bosnian War the bridge was a place of a brutal killings of a large number of civilians during the Visegrad massacre in 1992.

 • Sopocani Monastery--near Novi Pazar..The Sopocani monastery , an endowment of King Stefan Uro? I of Serbia, was built in the second half of the 13th century, near the source of the Ra?ka River in the region of Ras, the centre of the Serbian medieval state. The church was dedicated to the Holy Trinity and completed around 1265, with interior decorated shortly thereafter. Archbishop Sava II, who became the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1263, is represented in the procession of archbishops in the area of the altar. The frescoes of Sopo?ani are considered by some experts on Serbian medieval art as the most beautiful of that period. On the western wall of the nave is a famous fresco of the Dormition of the Virgin. In the 16th century the monks had to temporarily leave the monastery on several occasions due to the Ottoman threat. Finally, during one raids in 1689 the Ottoman Turks set fire to the monastery and carried off the lead from the church roof. The brotherhood escaped with some important relics to Kosovo - but did not return to Sopo?ani; it remained deserted for over two hundred years, until the 20th century. The church slowly decayed: its vaults caved in, its dome fell down, and the remains of the surrounding buildings were covered with rubble and earth..Finally, during the 20th century the monastery was restored and today it is settled by a thriving brotherhood of dedicated monks. The fact that most of the Sopo?ani frescoes still shine with radiant beauty - surviving more than two centuries of extreme exposure to the elements - many consider nothing less than a divine miracle.

On a hilltop overlooking Novi Pazar is the 12th century monastery of ?ur?evi stupovi, long left in ruin, but recently restored and with a monastic community using it, with plate glass to keep out the weather and preserve the fine frescos. • Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy vesper service at St. Susanna Orthodox Church, Jamestown, Calif.

The Sunday of Orthodoxy is the first Sunday of Great Lent. The dominant theme of this Sunday since 843 has been that of the victory of the icons. In that year the iconoclastic controversy, which had raged on and off since 726, was finally laid to rest, and icons and their veneration were restored on the first Sunday in Lent. Ever since, this Sunday has been commemorated as the "Triumph of Orthodoxy."
